The Buzz 103.1 Killed by CBS Radio, Replaced by NOW 103.1

Categories: Cancellations
Buzzlogo_dead.jpg
After 16 years on the air, as of 3 p.m. Monday the Buzz 103.1 FM is no more and "The Only Station That Really Rocks" in South Florida could be playing Lady Gaga right now.

After Cox Radio dismantled 93 Rock last year at about this time, the West Palm Beach rock station (WPBZ) was the lone outpost left for anything involving a distortion pedal or any level of angst on the FM dial. But apparently the station will live on via HD radio, and the new station in its place is NOW 103.1 FM, which serves up "Today's best hits, without the rap." Having endured this format before in a different market, it's basically the pits. Even those among our writing corps who said they didn't like the station won't like this watered-down format any better.

The news was dispatched suddenly without any warning following what was perhaps the final financial commitment for the station's old format -- Saturday's Buzz Bake Sale at Cruzan Amphitheatre, which will apparently be the last one we're ever gonna see. Following the cancellation of the Langerado Music Festival earlier this year, it does seem that rock does not rock in South Florida. More on rock's downward trend here and thoughts from Revolution's managing partner Jeff John here.

This message is posted on the Buzz's now semi-obsolete site:

To all of our loyal Buzz listeners, THANK YOU for the past 16 years.  It's been a long ride and we are glad you were there with us.  Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever.  In an effort to keep your Buzz music alive we have moved The Buzz to 103.1 HD-2 and streaming online at Buzz103.com.  We encourage you to download the free Radio.com app from your app store and listen to "Florida's New Rock Alternative" anywhere.

Again thank you all for being a part of our lives.  We'll see you on the other side.  Rock on

Meanwhile, NOW 103.1 announces "big things" moving forward. The following press release is pretty strange, but nothing stranger than the lines in italics. Apparently a bunch of West Palm Beach women and their daughters are to blame for this station's strategic shift.

Focusing on today's music, there is a new choice in West Palm Beach. This new station promises to be the feel good button of local radio. On-Air, NOW 103.1 (WPBZ-FM) will be heard locally. On-Line, the station will be available everywhere at Now1031.com and Radio.com.

NOW, brings a diverse playlist of hit music. The station will include artists ranging from: Lady Gaga to Lady Antebellum. What you will hear is described as a cool, energetic music machine. Women in West Palm Beach have been searching for an alternative to cluttered, talky radio stations. NOW promises to deliver on this need. Finally, there is a choice that both mothers and daughters can agree on.

Listeners can stay connected with NOW 103.1 in a variety of ways. Whether they want to hear the latest hits, receive pop culture and music news, stream the station to their computer, win prizes or get insider information about station events and On-Site appearances, the website will be the hub for everything "NOW", keeping this audience connected.

Benjamin Hill, Senior Vice President and West Palm Beach Market Manager announced today's change. "This station is ALL about the hits, and favorite artists. The local market has shown a great deal of interest in this format. We are confident that this option will be a welcome change." Hill stated, "That was then, this is NOW."

The new sound of this station will include a playlist featuring today's hits from favorite artists including: Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Pink, Daughtry, Rhianna, and Adele. "This is a natural fit for our station mix." Operations Director, John O'Connell said, "We are confident that after listening once that today's women will make the switch to NOW 103.1."

The Buzz, a heritage rock station, was previously found on 103.1. The Buzz will now be available on the station's HD 2 multicast channel and will continue to be streamed online at buzz103.com. These internet savvy listeners are already spending a good portion of their time on the web listening to music. On mobile devices, free apps are available for iPhone and Android. These can be downloaded from the ITunes music store or the Android Market. CBS RADIO hopes that this option will appeal to this group of music fans.

THANK YOU!  Finally, one sensible person on this messageboard!  I agree with you 100%.

i haven't listened to radio in about 4-5 years now, so this was news to me earlier today. though, it has been obvious the Buzz would die, alternative rock formatted radio is the bane of rocks very existence. why not an actual rock station? what we would love as fans of the rock is a station that plays doom, drone, crust, hardcore, industrial, etc.. an all inclusive rock station. Rock radio stations cannot survive with such fragmentation being promoted by the very stations themselves. i say good riddance 'alt rock' radio, i'd much rather have the death of rock on radio then further fragmentation of rock music fans.

If you have a car that only has AM/FM radio built into it, it's over for you!

Yup, 103.1 is WIRK country now and all their websites have been taken down. Sunny 104.3 moved to the old WIRK spot on the dial and "NOW 103.1" is kaput. The new 104.3 station is "Smooth," whatever that means. According to an article I read online, they're looking to move 104.3 to Miramar and downgrade its license. The Buzz website is still up, though. Ha ha ha!

Hey guys, haven't been on this thread for a while.  So, how did your petition to get the Buzz back work?  Any luck?

just  to give you all a heads up 103.1 will become country (WIRK)  At least according to the WIRK website.  So I am GUESSING that NOW 103.1 will be on 104.3 since Sunny 104.3 is moving to 107.9 FM.

This is crap. how does a city not have a rock station! Just another reason this area sucks. This was a really stupid move and I hope the new station crashes and burns.

I hate the new station, format. Your repeat of pop tunes is not worth hearing for more than half an hour at most. Every twenty minutes. Enough. I think even my dogs are tired of hearing it. Now I only have the station on when I am leaving the house. I do Not want to hear any more. I would rather be in silence. Please give me an alternative station. I do not or enjoy the same crap over & over. Thank youKaren Combs

HBC1,

You have commented many, many times. Clearly you hated the BUZZ. Tell us- why had you been listening in the first place?

What do you gain by beating a dead horse with such impudence?

If something I didn't like went away, I'm not sure I would dominate a thread on a daily basis over more than a months time. I'm not sure I would seek out supporters and mock or insult their comments like you.

If you didn't like the BUZZ, just smile and be glad it's gone. You're conspicuously fixated on something that just doesn't matter any more.

You're kind of a cunt.

Man, does the new station suck !  103.1 was one of only two radio station I ever listened to for the past 12 years. NOW is simply pre-programmed garbage. Where are the talk hosts? This is an easy way to unemploy thousands of people within days, across the country.

You know this is the second time in less than 1 year that both of the only 2 ( 103.1 THE BUZZ & 93.1) good rock stations have been exstinguished and ripped from our radios When I listen to the NOW 103.1 I want the pull over on the side of the road and blow my f%#*ing brains out. My god people what the hell is happening two south floridas radio. This is bullshit. Thanks for taking the only two rock sation away for us

South Florida's radio stations have always been bullshit, including its fake rock stations like Buzz and Gater.

I am a woman. I listened once. I turned the channel. "NOW" is crap. I don't like the idea that someone decided this is the type of music women want to listen to.

I think getting rid of the Buzz sucks. If its not broke, don't fix it. I hate the new radio station so far and think this "women and their daughters" don't know what they are talking about. The BUZZ was the best radio station we had. VERY disappointed.

Jesmel22798
Jesmel22798

personally i think now 103.1 sucks now im stuck listening to the gater we have enough pop and rap stations 95.5 and 102.3 being the top best if they were gonna knock out a station it should have been 97.9 honestly  R.I.P buzz

Anyone who accepts and listens to horrible prefab music with auto-tuned vocals (like they will undoubtedly play on the new format if they aren't already) needs to admit that they have no taste whatsoever.

Well boys and girls CBS AKA "liberal Media" and democratically controlled, gave you just what you wanted. So why are you upset? OH I’m sorry I should have said “just gave you what they think you need” regardless of what you want! Let’s see now, salt out of fast food, sodas machines out of schools… need I say more. It’s called “SOCIAL ENGINEERING”. When you drink the democrats Kool-Aid (believe what they say without verifying it yourself) they then expect you to do as they say. If you haven’t guessed it by now, I’m a proud republican and more so a conservative. Labeled bad by those you listen to, yet it simply boils down to we like less government intrusion in our lives. You know the stuff like LOWER taxes and LESS government regulation. BUT!!! If you believe that CBS switched the format due to “MONEY” alone then once again you’re being a good "Progressive" drinking their Kool-Aid.

Hey Pete is that really the best you could come up with? But then again when someone has a difference of opinion but no sound facts to back it up I guess it’s better to revert to name calling. OK, OK here ya go… Nanny nanny boo boo what bounces off of me sticks to you LOL. But seriously add to the discussion Pro or Con I don’t really care which side you’re on. Otherwise it really doesn’t help this cause….

This is the stupidest thing I'm a mother and a daughter. Screw you guys. Buzz was good and natural. Those bands actually learned and played instruments not used computers.

Wanted to share!Regarding articles below, seems like this is a trend that has been happening for several years now by ‘C B S’ . I think the info they are using is only part of the picture and not a true accuracy of radio markets. I don’t think the segment of people that download from the net represents the total true market. I don’t EVER download from the internet, neither does my wife. WE listen to RADIO or buy the occasional CD.. The actuall CD! I would presume there are many more like us! So, Skewd data at best! I really don’t think 103.1 NOW will gleam enough listeners from the other several top 40 in the area to gain enough ad revenue to equal what they already had with the BUZZ Alt Rock. I could be wrong, but don’t foresee it. *below are quoted*a couple years back This has happened in Boston. _ “Boston’s 104.1 WBCN, “The Rock of Boston,” will leave the airwaves on August 13th. The rock station had been broadcasting for 41 years”also, According to the New York Times, K-Rock’s listenership had fallen to 21st in New York’s Arbitron rankings in the important Age 12-and-above demographic for the month of January. The CBS-owned WNOW, or NOW FM as 92.3 will be known as of tomorrow, will face off against a giant in New York radio in Z100, a Clear Channel-owned Top 40 radio station that’s been around since 1983 and represents the Number Two radio station in the region. CBS Radio has made it a habit in challenging Clear Channel’s Top 40 domination of late, as CBS turned Los Angeles station KLSX into Top 40 to compete against Clear Channel’s KIIS two weeks ago.The shift to Top 40 represents the direction the entire music industry is heading: While music sales are slumping and radio stations are suffering through their worst years since the 1950s, sales of digital singles have gone through the roof. Top 40 radio caters to that crowd.IS ROCK RADIO DYING AS WE KNOW IT? (you can’t say FM radio is dying to all those on that band wagon in response due to rocks decline on the Fm dial. Look at all the pop top 40 & Country FM stations and a few rock flourishing. )THIS TREND SUCKS. How many top 40 stations in each market do we actually need. Screw CBS! Defend them if you will, but I give thumbs down. No love here for the CBS’s NOW format! Here is to Hoping the BUZZ can make a comeback!

HBC1
HBC1

Here's what I don't understand.  If public radio in general is so bad, why not BOYCOTT it?  Why is there so much politics on this thread about what formats are out there?  If you as a consumer are a true fan of a particular genre, whether it be rock, rap, dance, whatever, why not just put a little bit of effort and do your own research?  Why do you need rich corporate guys sitting comfortably in an office to serve you the newest "hip" bands on a silver platter?  Are people as a whole really that complacent and uncreative?  That is why I have absolutely no sympathy for the Buzz fans and what they've lost.  You are all acting as if the Buzz and Gater are the ONLY two sources of rock music in the world!  Why give a shit about radio to begin with?  If it gets littered with Top 40 garbage, so what?  The only people who care about this issue are ones who only base their music taste on popularity and public approval.

By the way, like I said before, "good luck" with your little petitions.

HBC1
HBC1

By the way, I'm glad that FM radio as a whole is dying off.  That means that more people will be forced to uses satellite radio and internet, thus giving more exposure to non-mainstream bands that need it.

@ HBC1  You are a Dip Shi(T).  There exisit already  and YOU already have 2 or MORE top 40 formats in this area catering to the so called Women demographics, top 40 crowd, teenie boppers or the alleged WPB market as they or you believe it to be.  We only had 1 station catering to our market and crowd, only 1. We want it back. so you just jump on over to your other stations and leave the Buzz crowd alone. CBS stinks!  This would also be addressed to anyone else on his bandwagon!!!!  and our crowd is not a few.  Petition is over 3500 strond go far. We are many more. ! The Buzz admitted they had tons of listeners.  CBS is quotes as going after a MORE lucrative market!  Greedy Jerks!

Thesearchforbigfoot
Thesearchforbigfoot

Just what we need, another station that caters to 13 year old girls with crappy corporate pop music. Because we weren't getting enough Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Bruno Mars already. This is what you get when corporate focus groups come up with radio stations. They all sound the same, and they all play dreadful pop music.

Admittedly, the Buzz had declined in recent years. It got too commerical. You had their DJs plugging lazer hair removal and mattresses. But it was still better than nothing. Now we're left with no alternative rock stations in South Florida. Thanks corporate asshats!
