Monterey Club Is Closing After New Year's Eve

Fort Lauderdale punk and rockabilly venue the Monterey Club is closing December 31 after a little more than two years in business.

The spot, located in the front room of the Orange County Choppers motorcycle shop just south of SR-84 on Federal Highway, has hosted a diverse slate of national acts (Wayne "The Train" Hancock, Laramie Dean), local bands, dance nights, benefits, and birthday parties. The closure comes because of the economics, according to owner Robert Stannard (seated in the center of the photo above).

"It's been a fun two years for everybody," he says. "But when you don't make any money, it gets to a point where you gotta make a decision, you know? Unfortunately, selling just beer and wine just doesn't cut it. That's pretty much the bottom line. The margins aren't there. I'd love to keep it going, but it's a tough situation, you know?"

Last year, New Times' Mickie Centrone reported on the bar's outlook as it approached its first anniversary and concluded by saying: "Without the Monterey Club, area music junkies would be without a Peach Pit, without a meeting place, and without a venue that feels like you're watching a concert inside your own living room." And so the time is now to soak up all of that before a sendoff show on New Year's Eve.

Between now and then, Monterey is hosting the Heroes and Cons CD-release show on Friday, the Christmas Disaster block party and the Morgan LaRue Burlesque show on Saturday, a Bikes N Bands event on Sunday, a punk night led by Flees on December 22, and a Pool Party extravaganza on December 30. Stannard is remaining tight-lipped about the New Year's Eve closing bash for now.

"We have about 50 bands who want to play now," he says. "It's kind of ironic. Give me a day or two, and I'll have an answer for you."

After that, the plan is to move operations to another location and keep all of the bookings currently on the Monterey Club calendar. Stannard is working through the details now, and we'll likely have an update later this week. Things are similarly mum regarding what will become of the Orange County Choppers space once Monterey vacates.

Is Stannard's new spot going to be in Fort Lauderdale? "We'll keep it in the area, absolutely," he says.

Look.  I can't speak for every band or employee of Rob's.  I worked there as a DJ for a minute.  My band played there a bunch as well.  Out of all the scummy shitbags running things down here, the only one that ever even tried to treat anyone fairly, in my experience, was Rob and Craig.  Name a club down here and odds are i've done the same thing with them.  The Monterey had faults.  Sure.  Lack of liquor.  Whatever.  I'm sure there was a bit of "the check is in the mail" but that shit comes with the business.  I was compensated TOO WELL.  I actually felt bad taking money from these guys because i could tell they were taking care of dj's and bands.  TO A FAULT.  They were the only club down here who even let you look at the totals before they paid you.  I know i was never, repeat never, ripped off.  I did some things for free sometimes to try and build a relationship with the bar.  They in turn paid me sometimes when i clearly didn't earn it in order to build a relationship with me.  That kind of give and take is hard to find down here.  As for underage drinkers, i worked the door a few times, and that shit was flat out not true.  Id's were checked and rechecked.  No one got by me and they damn sure didn't get by the captain.  The only bad thing you could say about door policy was sometimes it was hard to get the patrons to use plastic cups outside.  That's it.  A lot of these bands and dj's want something for nothing.  They expect Jess to do all the promo work, The DJ to make up for their lackluster set, and then they bitch when they STILL get enough money for gas, dinner, and a pack of smokes.  Try breaking even at the poorhouse.  Try getting blood from the stone that is Jay.  Or Greg from the culture room ( actually nice dudes, personally. but business is business).  If anyone should learn anything from the Monterey it's that this is why we can't have nice things.  This whole business is fucked.  And you complain with food in your mouth and gas in your car.  Let me know how that shit works out.

It's Amazing everytime I write a comment it is deleted, What's the problem Rob... You really don't want the folks in Florida knowing the truth about you. It seems to me most of them have come pretty close to your bullshit!  The truth is this ROB STANNARD'S CLUB is closing do the the fact he is a DEAD BEAT DAD with a WARRANT and SUSPENED DRIVERS LICENSE ...... can't get a full liquor license!!.... DEAD BEAT DAD are not allowed one. Pay your children what you owe them!!  Rob left New Jersey, New York and PA. .. with a long line of DEBT...... ALL FACT!!

Thank you Rob, Craig, Stace, Captain, etc . . . The Mont was loved, and will be missed.

The real reason Mr. Rob Stannard is closing his business is because he is a DEAD BEAT DAD, owes his children back child-support of $68,000 and court ordered amounts of money totalling over $60,000. With a Warrant and a Suspened Drivers License, he is not eligible for a full Liquor License.. All you folks in Florida he is FULL OF SHIT!!

It is a tough business environment and things are not looking like they stand to get a lot better at any time soon.  I never made it to the Monterey Club, but was tempted along the way by a few bands (Spred The Dub, Stephanie Smerkers) that I know would have been worth the trip to hear.

Someone told me that the owner of The Backroom Blues club now located in Delray Beach at the SW corner of Atlantic Ave and Congress was quoted recently saying, "If you are in this business today and you say you are making it, you're lying."  I haven't yet checked out the new location of The Backroom either, but again find myself tempted by some of the great bands.

It is a busy world!  Contrary to what some may say, there are still a LOT of venues in South Florida that offer great live music.  Karaoke is not "live music", by the way, if anyone was being misled by places that call it that... have a great day!

chatty turds love the gossip..

who cares what people claim... other people's business is other people's business.

the story is that we all lost a great local place for music...

not that some prima donnas got their feelings hurt because they had to suffer with wine and beer while getting up close and personal with some great national and local bands.

or that a friend of a friend of a friend heard that the owner eats babies and copulates with satan

me and everyone i know always had a great time there. and i dont know anyone that was done wrong by anyone there.

bottom line... no decent place for local bands to play in Broward again,.... back to driving to dade or palm beach... yay.

unless of course you wear white belts and have stupid ironic facial hair in which case there's an abundance of shitty pretentious bars to choose from.

Monterey... you'll be missed by all.  probably most by the anonymous haters...

EVERYTHING Rob Stannard says should come with a shovel and boots. The checks in the mail. Thank you for NOT being open after you booked my band that drove 4 hours. And telling everyone we were "compensated"

I support local music. Love little clubs like these, but the issues with this place were many.  Beer & wine only - for a whisky crowd.  Obstructed stage views. Cramped, cramped, cramped - Don't get me wrong, I love a livingroom feel, but don't make a habit of sitting on stranger's laps.

The South Florida rock music scene sucks balls.  Thank God we still have The Culture Room and Revolution.

The next wave is on the way, I hope...... you can feel the groundswell and angst growing in the scene that brought us bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Marilyn Manson.

This place was such a great home for music and the staff was so supportive to Florida's local talent. Thank you Rob for giving us The Monterey Club and for the support given SBW. I look forward to seeing what you launch next!

Try buying an actual liquor license and getting some serious parking. The location is actually prime, particularly now that skating rink has been demolished. Remember: Businesses are only as successful as the effort being put into them. Sounds like a lot of excuses to me, Stannard...

Wow... Levy. Show us who you are instead of hiding behind your bullshit. I guess the bar should apologize for not being independently wealthy? Let us know when you open your own place. We will all come over and drink our asses off. After all, it is so easy to open one, isn't it? Make it happen Levy, we are waiting impatiently. Ohm no excuses, either.

Licenses are issued in a lottery by the State of Florida approximately once a year. They are called quota licenses because the number of licenses issued to any given county is based an increase of 7500 new residents to a particular county. License values are based in part on supply and demand. Most counties have an average established price. However, if there is a glut of licenses, the price will often be less than average, but if a license in a particular county is hard to find, then the price could be higher.

Really? Really? Maybe Rob and all the employees (who have day jobs) can pool their money and raise about 200 grand for what you're talking about. Don't disparage Rob because you live in fantasy land where money appears from dragon eggs that rain on Tuesdays. Christ almighty.

Good point Mike and well informed. But the bottom line is, its not the economics, any club run so poorly....  and trying to live off the the underaged crowd that worshipped the shithole as the only place they had to go, well, its not going to make it. Of course those kids are upset. They can't go anywhere else and get away with drinking.  Its too bad, it had potential, but from the start anyone that TRIED to support that place, put time in there, ended up leaving and mad, owed money and tired of being lied to. You know. It had its good points, good booking and bands, good promotion at one time, but it was doomed from the start with such a loser running the show. I haven't been in there since its first year and I don't feel like I missed a thing. There is pelnty of good places to go in town and hear great live music. Thi is just bullshit.
