Fort Lauderdale's Möthersky Unveils First Live Shows at the End, Death to the Sun

In the grand tradition of Mötley Crüe and Motörhead, Richard Vergez's Möthersky project is an umlaut-sweetened affair for unflinching, discerning listeners. And that's exactly where the similarity to the two hard rock acts ends. Fort Lauderdale-based Vergez, a regular on County Grind for his conceptual record sleeve artwork and collaborations with Hollywood's Mr. Entertainment & the Pookiesmackers, has assembled several marvelous instrumentals over the past three years for an album titled A Mystery in Color and is finally performing these songs in a public forum.

Even with no vocals, this is an extremely evocative work that enters cinematic and artistic realms beyond your darkest dreams. Imagine a twangy, synth-fed soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino-directed remake of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, or check out this sweeping instrumental that wraps up the Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen album, or just recall some early '80s Cure singles, if that suits.

Several of Vergez's songs are accompanied by equally dark, moody visuals that he assembled himself. For example, "Father Sky" rides a bed of desolate synths and an equally lonely electric guitar. Feast thine eyes and ears on this assembled work featuring Hans Richter clips.

More eye candy can be unwrapped via Vergez's YouTube page, and listen to new compositions at Soundcloud. Of late, Miami-based Kelvin Mitchell has joined to play bass and second synth for the live setting and has assisted in recording post-A Mystery in Color songs straight to tape with no overdubs.

Two opportunities exist on the horizon to see Möthersky in a live setting -- one is Saturday.

Möthersky as part of Strategies Against Architecture. 8 p.m. Saturday, September 10, at the End, 818 SW Fourth Ave., Miami. Click here.

Möthersky at Death to the Sun III. Saturday, September 24, at Snooze Theatre, 798 Tenth St., Lake Park. No cover. Click here.
