Ten Reasons Why the Go-Go's Are Better Than the Bangles

It's been 30 years since the release of the Go-Go's debut album, Beauty and the Beat, and in celebration, the girls are heading back out onto the road. Labeled the "Ladies Gone Wild Tour" and knowing their history of raunchy backstage behavior, we're expecting debauchery.

For years, there has been an ongoing debate about who does it better, the Go-Go's or the Bangles? Well, in celebration of their upcoming tour, which includes a show at Hollywood's Hard Rock Live on August 7, we're siding with the Go-Go's.

View our reasons why the Go-Go's are better than the Bangles after the jump.
1. Belinda Carlisle was Playboy's cover girl in August 2001. Say all you want about Susanna Hoffs being the hotter frontwoman, but let's be honest guys: In "Walk Like an Egyptian," sultry eyes aside, she is way too skinny.

2. Jane Wiedlin has had various cameos in classic movies such Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures and Clue.

3. A young Rob Lowe was in their video for "Turn to You." Who doesn't love Rob Lowe circa early 1980s, fresh off the set of The Outsiders?

4. For a short period of time, Belinda Carlisle played the drums in L.A. punk band the Germs under the alias "Dottie Danger."

5. Jane Wiedlin is an ordained minister by the name "Reverend Sister Go-Go" and is available for weddings. I wonder what kind of vows she writes for the happy couples. Are they all made up of Go-Go's lyrics? What does she wear?

I love both The Banglas and The Go-Go's and think it sad that they are always lumped together for comparison just because they were both all girl groups in the 80s who wrote and played their own music.  They were two different sound-influenced groups.  To compare them both is like not having respect for music or music theory whatsoever!  The Go-Go's founded their original sound from the punk movement, while the Bangles followed the twangy "paisley-late 60's sound".  You could tell by the kinds of songs they chose to cover.  The Go-Go's weren't influenced by the Beatles. but the Bangles were.  The Go-Go's covered the Shangri-Las. while the Bangles would have never chosed to do that.  I think it sad that if these two groups were comprised of men, we probably wouldn't see them compared to each other at all.

And really by the way, even though I think Belinda is hot and Gina is one of the best at what she does, these are stupid reasons listed here.  Sue Hoffs was also hot and she has aged really well.  But the other Go-Go's and Bangles were all beautiful.  I remember my crushes on each of them coming in phases.  Hahaha.

While Beauty and the Beat is a timeless classic, if you want to get technical, I think the Bangles had more billboard chart hits.  I'm not saying the Bangles are better but if you want to measure mainstream success, charting billboard hits and radio play frequency would be it.

It's all silliness though....both groups were awesome and they can STILL jam!  Let's drop this nonsense and just LOVE THE MUSIC!

The Go-Go's are hands down the absolutely best all female band to ever exist. The magic of the Go-Go's comes from their music, their performances, their personalites. For this reason, no other female band before them or after them has acheived their status or commercial success. Beauty and the Beat is a timeless masterpiece that could fit well in any decade of music. It does not have a dated sound. The Go-Go's will possibly be the only all female band to achieve a number one albumn. It wasn't done before them, and 20 years later it hasn't been done.

I'll give one reason the Go-Go's are better.  Gina.

Actually 1960s rock band Fanny pre-dated the Runaways as the first all-girl band to write their own songs/play instruments. Although, I prefer the Runaways to the unfortunately-named Fanny...But why do we tokenize women? Wouldn't it be great if their were HUNDREDS of all-women bands!

Both bands are completely different.  Do people just compare them because of their lady parts?  The Go-Go's are surf-punk-pop new wave and The Bangles were 60's/70's retro rock with folk rock leanings.

I saw both bands live, in their early days, and the Bangles were a more polished sound, esp. vocally. (I recall one gig, in particular @ the On Klub, when they were still the Bangs, and I felt like I was in the presence of a female version of the Beatles... it was a very special gig.)

Belinda Carlisle is way hotter than Susanna Hoffs. Belinda has a classic beauty, her bone structure is to die for.

Actually The Runaways were the 1st all girl band to play their own instruments & write their own songs starting in 1974....

But they didn't go to number one! Few people have ever heard a Runaways' song. None are memorable for me. Cherry Bomb is not memorable...sorry.

Yes, but the Runaways did not have the commercial success that the Go-Go's did.

Kim Fowley is credited as writing various songs on their first album, including Cherry Bomb, Is It Day or Night, American Nights, and a few others.

Yes, I can, because my pronunciation is quite good. However, Belinda was hotter than Suzanna Hoffs in the 80s. Botox has nothing to do with that.

And, can you please unselect your caps lock? The all caps thing is really obnoxious.

There are a ton of girl bands prior to The Go-Gos, but the last line says they were the first all female band to 1) play all their own instruments 2) write their own songs and 3) achieve a #1 album spot on the Billboard list. It's a combo of all three achievements, not just one singular thing or them being an all girl band.

Calm the hell down. Jesus. What did the Runaways do? Have a COUPLE minor hits? Ooooh....Big deal. They didn't have anywhere near the success the Go-Go's had and still have. Where are they now?

Go-Go's were the first to have mainstream success and become household names....The Runaways are forgettable.
