Stifler From "American Pie" Was Inspired by Fort Lauderdale Man Now Charged in Fishtales Murder

Krebs, left, provided inspiration for Stifler.

Stifler, the oversexed and foul-mouthed jock from the American Pie movies, was partly based on the man police say stabbed to death a local drummer during a bar fight at Fishtales. Update: here's Krebs' booking photo.

Brian Krebs, who is in jail awaiting charges on first-degree murder and four counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, went to high school in Michigan with American Pie's screenwriter, Adam Herz.

Herz spoke to New Times on the phone today from his home in Beverly Hills. He  wouldn't confirm the Stifler-Krebs connection, but two people familiar with the screenplay confirmed that Krebs provided some of the inspiration for the Stifler character.

Herz said he had heard about Krebs' murder charge from an email chain going around friends from East Grand Rapids High School, from which Herz and Krebs graduated in 1991. "It's terrible that somebody I knew murdered someone. It's disgusting," Herz said. "Was he a violent person then? No. But was he a bit unusual? Yeah."

The Steve Stifler character appeared in the first American Pie movie in 1999. Played by Seann William Scott, Stifler was the hard-drinking lacrosse player for the fictional East Great Falls High. Stifler showed up again in American Pie 2 in 2001 and again in American Wedding in 2003. Since then, Stifler has become a cultural reference for dumb, skirt-chasing jocks.

Police say the April 17 altercation at Fishtales started when Krebs got into an argument about his bar tab. He returned later with a steak knife and allegedly stabbed popular local drummer Jimmy Pagano in the neck. Pagano fell to the floor bleeding to death, and Krebs is accused of stabbing five others before being tackled. Customers and employees then beat Krebs badly enough that he spent two nights in the hospital before he could be booked on the charges he now faces.

When asked about the connection between Stifler and Krebs, Herz initially said he didn't want to answer the question. Later in the phone call, he said the character was a composite based on several people he knew in high school. But two people familiar with the original script say otherwise. When asked about that discrepancy, Herz said, "It's not something I feel comfortable talking about."

Herz said he hasn't seen Krebs since high school and hasn't kept track of what his old classmate was up to (but they are friends on Facebook). "I keep asking myself, 'Somebody in my high school class murdered someone?' That's a hard thing to take."

I can not believe this is the Brian I was working with.  Brian was a recruiter in BioTech and working on a few opportunities with me.  He seemed like a great guy.

to all of brians krebs friends and family, look at him now on his arrest mugshot, it looks like he got the hell beat out of him , he is lucky he survived. the other four men he stabbed were not just bar employees or patrons, they were friends of Jimmy Pagano and one was my son. Our communtity has lost a very good person that will not be forgotten. As for that pc of crap that was born a loser he will go to prison and every nite wish that he was dead. May God forgive me, but until that day comes I hope every single nite of his wasteful life BRIAN EDWARD KREBS, MAY YOU BURN IN HELL IN YOUR DREAMS UNTIL YOUR LAST BREATH

I also went to high school with Brian (graduated with him and Adam) and he was a Grade A JERK. He picked on the weak, targeted minorities with racial slurs and was nothing but a bully to people who couldn't defend themselves. Adam Herz was the complete opposite of Brian Krebs. He was/is a great guy and a gentleman throughout high school who's had great success with the American Pie movies. I say leave Adam alone when it comes to having Brian even remotely credited for a character that Adam wrote for his successful screenplay. To even associate the American Pie movies or Adam Herz and any/all of their success with Brian Krebs would be a disservice to what Adam has built. In my humble opinion, Brian doesn't deserve any applause for who he was in high school. Brian Krebs deserves one title, and that title is a "cold blooded killer". When the news broke the following morning the story should have read, "Man gets in dispute over bar tab, comes back with knife and gets shot before he can hurt anyone". PERIOD. END OF STORY. I, like Adam, share the same feelings and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I went to school with someone who could do something so senseless, it is disgusting.

I would like to also say that our comments and attention should be focused towards the gentleman that lost his life defending his friends that tragic evening and the others who were hurt while trying to disarm Brian. I've read the tribute website to "Jimmy", the victim in all of this and he will be sadly missed by many. To Jimmy's friends and family: My heartfelt condolences go out to you and everyone's that Jimmy affected, he sounds like he lived his life helping others with open arms and an open heart, I wish I could have met him.

This is all true and only an handful of people who went to this high school (including myself) know this. I'm surprised the story came out so quickly about this.

That is crazy. Hollywood will find a way to make money on it, probably with another sequel: American Pie 4: The Stifler Stabbings

Heres a better question. Why are we wasting air on this guy? He murdered someone over an eight dollar bar tab. Shouldnt we hear more about the victim instead?

Check out the Facebook page for Remembrance of Jimmy Pagano and you'll see how missed he will be. Much more important than focusing on the douche who commited this.

Don't worry, there is a lot more that we're working on regarding Jimmy Pagano.

I am just worried that they will do what they did to a friend of mine back in St Louis. My friend Cassie Kovack was brutally killed by a right wing radio personality. Then he began dragging her name through the mud calling her a crack dealer, which she was not. He was on a drug binge when she saw him and tried to help him. Gave him something to eat since she knew him as a neighbor. And he carved her up saying that she was a demon. This happened way back in 2005 and looks like he may get off since he still hasnt gone to trail.I just do not want to see the same thing happen again.
