Earlier this year, West Palm's representative on this weekend's Bruise Cruise (and tonight's pre-party) Surfer Blood played a pair of concerts in South Florida to unveil some material not featured on the band's debut, Astro Coast. The first, a hastily announced gig at Respectable Street, featured a trio of songs never played in front of an audience. Ten days later, the guys moved over to Propaganda to share the stage with Atlanta's Carnivores, and new material came out again.
Fortunately, New Times photographer brought his video camera the second time around, and captured a few songs destined for Surfer Blood's forthcoming EP. None have announced titles yet, but there's a decent chance a couple might figure into the shows in the next couple days.
1. A quickie, but some cool dissonance through the instrumental coda.
2. A slightly somber tone for this song, and a sweet solo at the end.
3. Fantastic in the vein of "Surf Wax America" was what was said upon first hearing it, and due credit to the rhythm section for the head-nodding continuing upon repeat listens. Singer J.P. Pitts even admits at the end that it went well. Already personal favorite.
