MP3 of the Day: "Black & White" by Phineas J. Whoopie, Playing at Pulp Live this Saturday

pjwcover.jpg
That's right, the honorable Phineas J. Whoopie has officially retired from lecturing Tennessee Tuxedo and Chumley the Walrus to pursue a career in music. For those of you not up on obscure cartoon characters from the 1960s, Phineas is the bespectacled professor who would help out Underdog and his friends whenever they got into a jam. Now he's donated his name to a Fort Lauderdale based indie rock band fronted by Jose Martinez.

The group's first CD, Poetry Clown, came out way back in 1998, but the band has continued at a slow and steady pace ever since. PJW sounds a bit like an upbeat combination of Toad the Wet Sprocket and the Stone Roses coming down off a massive sugar high. This Saturday's show celebrates the release of the band's fourth album, Down the Rails.
