For Halloween, Five Creepy Music Videos (Some For Unintentional Reasons)

Categories: Talking Shit

Jan Terri, "Get Down Goblin"

In the Eighties and Nineties, Jan Terri was a limousine driver who became a cult sensation in her hometown of Chicago for her self-produced albums and music videos. As naive and zero budget as they are, Terri's pluck, tenacity, and particular, uh, aesthetic, actually scored her a fan in Marilyn Manson, who once tapped her to open a gig. "Get Down Goblin," her tribute to Halloween, is probably the most famous of her videos. But those interested in the Terri oeuvre must absolutely also check out "Losing You" and "Baby Blues."

Bonnie Tyler, "Total Eclipse of the Heart"

It's no surprise that the Eighties were the heyday for over-plotted, surreally creepy videos. Here, being in love apparently means being trapped in an abandoned church/mansion, in which a bat-angel boy releases doves, a swim team in goggles gets doused with mystery water, and ninjas -- ninjas! -- practice their moves before zombie motorcycle thugs invade.

The Fat Boys, "Are You Ready for Freddy?"

Here, one of the most lovable, accurately named hip-hop groups of the Eighties have to spend the night in a haunted house in order to claim the spoils of their Uncle "Frederick's" will. Marvel as the portly MCs get menaced by our favorite vintage murderous haunter of dreams, Freddie Krueger!

Alice Cooper, "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)"

Here's another gem from the annals of Eighties horror film soundtracks; this one appeared on that of Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Good ol' Alice plays both the video protagonist's strict father (scary!) as well as a ghoulish master of ceremonies who terrorizes teenage daters in a movie theater. Watch this all the way through for the last five seconds, and one of the most disturbing Cooper voices ever.

Billy Idol, "Dancing with Myself"

The overwhelming, vampiric-seeming sexual energy Billy radiates here is so strong, it stops these mummy/zombie things in their tracks. Whew!
