Your Gluten-Free Beer Might Not Be Gluten-Free

If you're celiac, bitter beer is the least of your problems.
Scientists published a finding that all celiacs or gluten-intolerant individuals should pay attention to.

In late-2011, the American Chemical Society released a report in which they broke down the ingredients in beer, specifically focusing on hordein, prolamin glycoprotein present in barley and some other cereals.

What's significant about this specific element? Like wheat, rye, and barley, hordein falls under the "gluten" category.

The scientists decided to test 60 different types of beers for their hordein levels, using ELISA or "enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay."

And what they found was shocking.

How does Guy Fieri choose the restaurants he features on his Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives?

If it's anything like his upcoming prospect, Boca Raton restaurant Talia's Tuscan Table, it's got a lot to do with character. Character from the food, the customers -- and even the establishment's owners.

And that's something Talia's Table has plenty to go around.

Bellini's Coal Fired Pizza
The fire -- the coal fire, at least -- is out at Bellini's Coal Fired Pizza restaurant in Fort Lauderdale.

After opening its doors more than a year ago off North Federal Highway, the establishment -- whose coal-fired crusts needed a little "refining," according to New Times' former food critic, John Linn -- unexpectedly closed up shop recently with no word as to why.

Mark Militello, the prolific restaurateur/chef, may not opening his long-anticipated Cabo Blue restaurant after all.

The restaurant, announced early this year, was to have an upscale Mexican theme. The waterfront location at the Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort was to also feature a taco cart on the beach to serve snacking sunbathers.

Daft Punk Partners With Coca-Cola

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger Coca-Cola
In this week's head scratching celebrity/corporate moment of "synergy" Rolling Stone (via Hype Beast) is reporting that French duo Daft Punk is hooking up with Coca-Cola to launch a special edition release of Daft Punk-inspired Coke bottles. The product will be dubbed Daft Punk x Coca-Cola Club Coke.

The limited edition product is set to hit shelves in March. Thus far, there's no official company release, nor does Daft Punk's or Coke's website make mention of the relationship. Seeing as Daft Punk is no stranger to the occasional Internet hoax, we'll take this with a grain of salt 'til the product hits the shelves. Spoka, the European PR agency presumably in charge of promoting the Daft Punk/Coca-Cola marriage (their site's in French, a class that I unfortunately snoozed through), has said the bottles are a Coke product inspired by the French duo and any "promo" materials floating around the Web right now are fan-created, not from Daft Punk.

In the event that this Daft Punk/Coca-Cola thing doesn't pan out, here's 5 equally odd or oddly appropriate musician/product pairings we wouldn't mind seeing:

Beer Stein-Holding Contest at Oktoberfest

Masskrugstemmen1.JPG.jpeg
Seeing as how gubernatorial candidates must now participate in Masskrugstemmen contests to prove their viability, this weekend's Oktoberfest may just prove to be a crucial turning point in Florida's heated governor's race.

When Wisconsin Republican Mark Neumann won a regional title last month (Masskrugstemmen is a German test of strength in which the contestant holds a full liter of bier in a glass stein for as long as possible), gubernatorial contestants nationwide noticed the uptick in his popularity.

Neumann ended up losing the primary, but candidates are still abuzz about what's being called the Masskrugstemmen Effect.
