Riverwalk Burger Battle IV: the Quest for a Proper Patty

BB3JudgeJack_6646-300.jpg
There are two important things to know about today's Riverwalk Burger Battle.

First, is that this year's winner will be whichever burger induces what Renee Quinn, a consultant for battle organizer Riverwalk Trust, called "Burger Nirvana."

Second, hopefully you already purchased your tickets, because they are now sold out. $40 for general admission will get you 16 burgers and three drinks, anything from Goose Island's pale ale to good ol' Jack Daniels.

Steak 'n Shake
The Steak 'n Shake 7x7 Burger: There's a new gut bomb in town.
If you've ever driven around in your car at two in the morning wondering where you could find a mega gut-bomb, then read on because we've found a doozie of a burger.

Steak 'n Shake has introduced the 7 x 7 Steakburger, and it's exactly what you think it is -- seven meat patties (and seven slices of cheese) all in one bun (because seven buns would be overkill, don't you think?).

This burger contains one full pound of meat and, according to Steak 'n Shake's nutritional statement, 1,330 calories; 98 grams fat, 45 grams saturated fat, and 4,490 milligrams sodium.

BurgieAwards2013SmallPoster.jpg
If you haven't noticed, comfort food is kind of "in" right now. And while most people go on and on about their favorite local places to pick up a burger or some other gratifying delicacy, few South Floridians know more about the subject than Miami-based food-blogger Burger Beast.

On Saturday night, the Fourth Annual Burgie Awards made its way way into Broward County for the first time, in Fort Lauderdale's Esplanade Park.

Here are the winners.

Have we had enough meat yet?
We would say that 2012 was year of the burger, but, then again, so was 2011. And for that matter 2010. Apparently, Americans are obsessed with red meat. After the economy took a landslide the love of all things meaty slid down to steak's less expensive counterpart: the burger.

We have already explored the ever-increasing "better burger" market here in South Florida, but the question is: when is it going to be enough?

Boca's gonna get beefy this summer.
Vegetarians are usually shut out of the burger battle game, left to nibble on toothpicks and stray pieces of lettuce that haven't been soaked in meaty leftovers. But the first-ever Boca Burger Battle: A Grilling Affair (which is in no way affiliated with a certain other Burger Battle that may be familiar to Fort Lauderdale residents) on July 14 aims to be more inclusive in that regard.

Robert Stanfield, event manager for the Boca Burger Battle production team said the event was "designed for the masses" and to have "something for everyone." That includes beef burger alternatives like tuna burgers and even a vegan option.
