South Florida's Best Margaritas

Margaritas and palm trees belong together, so it's no wonder South Florida is awash in tequila goodness. Clean Plate Charlie takes a look at some of the best margaritas in Broward and Palm Beach. These are finalists in the Best Of issue that will hit the stands in June -- as usual, feel free to let us know what we missed.

Canyon Southwest Café

The Day-Glo pink of Canyon's Prickly Pear Margarita hints at the Hawaiian Punch flavors favored by college girls with bad fake IDs, but devotees swear by this balancing act of a beverage. The subtle sweetness of prickly pear is tempered by the sour of lime and works in tandem to help the medicine (in this case, tequila) go down. Women pay $5 for the drink during happy hour, nightly -- except Saturday -- until 7 p.m.

Shaken, stirred, dirty, doused in fruit juices, and outfitted with spiffy window dressing, there are endless ways to get a martini -- or at least a cocktail going by the name -- in South Florida. Clean Plate Charlie takes a look at some of the best in Broward and Palm Beach offerings. These are some of the finalists for the anticipated (and sometimes debated) Best Of issue debuting in June. As usual, let us know what we missed in the comments.

Timpano Chophouse and Martini Bar

There are more than 20 specialty martinis on the menu at this power-lunch destination, from the simple Lemon Drop (Grey Goose Citrus and Banfi Limoncello) to more involved concoctions like the Red Razz Royale (Bacardi Razz, Red Bull, raspberries, and sparkling wine). The Lychee B and Big City Cosmopolitan are other popular choices, but you can also go the traditional route and order a plain ol' 'tini without any of the added garnishes or fixins.

South Florida's Best Coffee Shops

People are particular about coffee, whether they take it light and sweet, black, or muddy. Then there are the matters of beans: how recently they were roasted, whether they're fair trade, or whether any of it matters once they're in the cup, brewed by a Krups machine, a French press, or drip funnel for a single cup.

To complicate matters further, some of us like beer with our coffee, especially on weekends. Which brings us to the second of today's lists: South Florida's best coffee shops for every preference.Feel free to chime in to add favorites or disagree with our choices.

Fort Lauderdale is no slouch when it comes to street food, with plenty of options like The Whole Enchilada, My Market, Primanti's, and of course, LaSpada's. Yet when it comes to a sit-down midday meal that offers more than sandwich shop, the question remains: "Where should we go for lunch?" It is perhaps the question I'm most often asked since I've moved here. After the jump, behold: the lunch list. Consider the options and stake a spot for tomorrow.

Here's one thing the 'burbs might have over Miami: good bakeries. Older folks, cheaper rents, and a craving for nostalgic eats make Broward and West Palm a fertile environment for baking bread. Even if they're not all artisanal, each stop on our list has something to offer. Behold, the bakery list.
