Magic Hat Brewery and the Riverside Market Join Forces for Summer Movie Drinking Games
The quirky folks over at Magic Hat Brewery have managed a bit of a social coup by getting Fort Lauderdale's most compelling craft beer destination, the Riverside Market, to renege on its Sunday policy of "no TV, quality conversation only" by staging a summer movie series. With their couches at the ready and a new, retractable screen, the market's keeping it easy on your pockets too with a selection of $2 drafts and bottles available during the screening.
Built on the model of "drink when..." type of drinking games and surely bastardized by the "smeg-isms" of TV shows like Red Dwarf (chug a lager whenever someone says "smeg") and movies like Blue Velvet (slug a PBR and a Heineken whenever something weird happens) and the Deer Hunter (drink a Rolling Rock whenever Christopher Walken looks sad), they've wisely chosen as an opening salvo the Coen Brothers' 1998 cult classic The Big Lebowski.
The Big Lebowski is already a film that attracts a certain degree of fan-issued notoriety and shenanigans like the yearly Lebowski Fest, but it truly is a great way to ensure a perfect, if not completely boozy, launch of summer activity. Like all good drinking games that follow the "drink when..." method, this one too will have a set of rules depending on the film.
These are the rules for this Sunday's film:
• The Dude smokes pot
• Walter mentions Vietnam
• Donny says "Dude"
• Someone bowls a strike
• You see George Bush
• The Dude drinks a White Russian
• The Dude wears Jellies
• Walter says Shomer Shabbas
• Walter says "Shut the f*ck up, Donnie!"
• Flea is in the picture
• The Dude puts on sunglasses
• Someone says "gold bricker"
The other titles tentatively scheduled for the series are Dazed & Confused, Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Top Gun, and a TBA Alfred Hitchcock film. How these will carry out rulewise will have to wait until screening time, when the official rules will be given. But we'd be remiss if we didn't suggest Hitchcock's The 39 Steps and a drink every time the main character, Richard Hannay, runs and/or looks in disbelief. Just a suggestion.
The Summer Movie Drinking Games Series kicks off at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Riverside Market, 608 SW 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-358-8333, or visit theriversidemarket.com
