The Thai New Year Is All About Water and Chang Beer

Songkran, the Thai traditional new year -- better-known as the Water Festival -- is all about getting blasted with water and beer, and this year it landed on Sunday, April 13.

You missed out on celebrating the festivities in Chiang Mai or Phuket with the hundreds of thousands who gathered there, but it's not too late to do a little Thai-style celebrating right here. You need only two items to start a party in Florida, and you can probably guess what they are.

The first one is a giant Super Soaker. According to tradition, people in Thailand believe that water washes away bad luck. After performing a Buddhist bathing ritual, celebrants douse, dump, spray, and splash water on one another throughout the holiday. Here in the U.S., the water gun, blasters, and soakers should be used only on those are participating in the festivities, of course.

The second is Chang beer. Chang is a lager, full-bodied and sweet, and so named for the Thai elephant -- a symbol of the country's culture and pride. It was specifically brewed to perfectly complement Thai food flavors.

People probably drink other beer in Thailand, but this time of year, it's all about the Chang, baby. So that is what you should do this entire weekend, if not anything else, because you probably do not.
