We are all what we eat.
What the heck is in our food? With so many strange hard-to-pronounce scientific words appearing on food labels, it's tough for consumers to know what they are actually eating.

Look no further, dearest. World Food Day is this Saturday to deliver daylong tidbits on food sustainability and how to avoid food with pesky genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

This health conscious event is held worldwide and locally at Yellow Green Farmer's Market in Hollywood.

World Food Day, Rally for the Right to Know, is an annual campaign aimed at protecting our food supply, and providing support to our agriculture friends, the farmers. In addition, this rally intends to inform the public on health risks associated with consuming GMOs.

"GMOs are in nearly eighty-six percent of all processed, packaged foods," says Trish Sheldon, co-founder of GMO Free Florida. And this startling percentage means many are left in the dark.

"The average person is not aware, even many dietitians and some nutritionists aren't aware of what's really in our food," she says.

And the United States is behind in terms of correctly labeling food with GMOs according to Sheldon. "Sixty-four plus countries have mandatory labeling or an outright ban on such foods."

Saturday's event will include live music, educational speakers, raffles, and activities for kids.

"As consumers, we have the right to know what is in our food so that we can make informed choices about what we put in our body," she says.

World Food Day is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Yellow Green Farmer's Market. Admission is free. Call 954-674-8956.
