Ten Best Chefs in Broward County

Broward County is known for many things: beautiful beaches, spring break, giant yachts, the largest per-capita gay community in the country, an inability to vote properly, the most hated woman on the internet in Taylor Chapman -- well, a couple of months ago, at least -- the nice Prancercise lady, ass-kicking bouncers on the beach -- not in a good way -- the list goes on and on.

What you may have noticed is that a world-renowned culinary scene is not on the register.

Personally, we just think the rest of the world doesn't know what it's missing; we may have no recent James Beard nominees, but we have plenty of all-star and celebrity chefs. We think these talented men and women deserve some credit.

10. Steve Martorano - Cafe Martorano
Cook, DJ, celebrity, author, New Times Tastemaker, and just overall restaurant personality, Steve Martorano is one of Broward's most highly recognized chefs. You don't get that level of praise or recognition by being average. Twenty years ago, the cook -- he hates the term chef -- set up shop in a rundown strip-mall not far from Fort Lauderdale beach, and he's been blowing us away ever since with his old-school Italian food. Martorano has expanded over the years, adding locations in the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood and Vegas; however, he hasn't lost that classic Italian-American touch. From his awesome eggplant stack to his classic lasagna, this is Italian food like your Nonna used to make, but better -- sorry, G-ma.

9. Mike Hampton and Christy Samoy - Hot & Soul
They say, "Two heads are better than one." In the case of this mom-and-pop couple, we completely agree with whoever 'they' are. Separately, each one can cook up a storm; however, we're glad these two found each-other in more ways than one. Together the pair create fully homemade international fare with soul. From Italian "Gnaughty Gnocchi" with oxtail, San Marzano tomatoes, basil, and pecorino to Pilipino Chicken Adobo with soy sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, bay leaves, peppercorns, and jasmine rice to Cajun "Gumbo Yumbo," a combination of ham hock, andouille sausage, and chicken gumbo served with scallion rice, you can feel the love. Isn't that all you need?

Not at all. A lot of the culinary stuff going on in the US is very cool right now. Some of the European cooking methods are outdated anyway. The new wave is going to be mixing in some of the asian techniques and blending it with modern ones.

Like I said one maybe two on the list fit the bill.

Why dont u check everyone's background.

And not thru their bio or press release but real work history.

Who on the list even worked in Europe and not the ones who were born there it America s who really worked and LIVED in Europe.

Most if these south fl young chefs didnt even work for any real important chef and I don't mean just working somewhere for free a couple if weekends.

Oh and BTW da silva wasn't even a broward chef until she just took the 3030 job so how can she be #1 when she hasn't done anything yet.

Again really Paula da silva #1 really

3030 couldn't wait to get rid of the over rated (and they created him) and who do they replace him with?

Someone who all she knows is wat he showed her Paula da silva.

The food at 3030 was at best on their best night was good and in the lobby of a Marriott do I need to say more.

It's pretty crazy that these kids that you constantly put at the top of your lists don't have any sort of European experience. Most learned from chefs (and I use that respected term loosely down here) that have no great background themselves.

Next time u do another stupid list why don't you really delve into everyone's background deeply and then pick the most experienced instead of the most hyped.

Oh but why would you do that this is south Florida.

Btw you have maybe 1 maybe 2 chefs on your list that list that really has a notable background.

Is this like your food truck list? Where 2 of them aren't even in Florida? Lol

@sindyfl77 DaSilva may have just come back, but she got her start in Broward County. Are you saying that only chefs who have worked in Europe deserve to be acknowledged? I'll ask you again, who should have been featured that was not?
