Ten Best South Florida Food Trucks
8. The Rolling Stove
The fire-engine-red color and imitation smoke stack will not be able to help your cholesterol after trying out this truck -- eat a salad some other time. Here you'll find new takes on hearty Midwestern sides and sandwiches. Cheddar tater tots, barbecue chicken and pork, and chicken crispers fried in a Capt' Crunch crust and served with jalapeño jelly, caramelized onion, cheddar, and slaw can fill any homeland, farm-country craving. For anyone looking to kick up the calories with a bit of spice, owner Troy Thomas also offers a creative jerk section on the menu ranging from Dr. Pepper-braised jerk brisket with Swiss, caramelized onions, and Thousand Island slaw to simply grilled jerk chicken and pork topped with jalapeño jelly, cheddar, caramelized onions, and slaw.
7. PS 561
New Times winner for Best Hot Dog - 2013, PS-561 takes the New York-style hot dog and gives it a unique South Florida twist. Sabrett 100 percent beef hots dogs are dished out in a bright-yellow New York-themed public school bus and are split in half, grilled, and topped with gourmet toppings. In keeping with the whole academic theme, these ingenious dogs are handed down scholastic names. The FCAT comes with bacon, sweet coleslaw, jalapeños, and barbecue sauce; the Principal Ron has goat cheese, bacon, and barbecue; the Math Wiz is appropriately served with Asian-style slaw and sriracha mayo -- probably, the smartest hot dogs you'll ever stick in your mouth.
