Bartender Cocktail: Sarah Calogero of Bad Ragaz Gives Her Recipe for Belgian 75

Gin might be all the rage right now, but the juniper-infused spirit has been around for centuries.

While the English are usually associated with gin, the first documented production took place in Holland in the early 17th century, where it was sold for medicinal purposes ranging from stomach pains to gout and gallstones. Just a guess, but we're going to assume the pain relieving effects were temporary.

It was later combined with tonic as an antimalarial for use by the army of the British East India Company. Quinine, an ingredient in tonic prevented malaria -- the gin just made the experience more enjoyable palatable.

Since the centuries old formula has become the new 'in' thing of late, we asked Bad Ragaz bartender Sarah Calogero for a modern take on the classic gin cocktail.

Gin might be kind of a big deal right now, but beer cocktails are another trendy concept in the world of mixology. While the proportions of beer to spirit differs from drink to drink, this one add just a touch of Belgian Witbier (white beers), known for its pale and cloudy appearance and slightly spiced flavor profile. Blue Moon is the most well-known beer produced in the witbier style.

Belgian 75
2 oz Gin
½ ounce Lemon juice
½ oz Simple syrup
Lefebvre Blanche de Bruxelle

Combine all of the ingredients in a cocktail mixer with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass over fresh ice. Top with Lefebvre Blanche de Bruxelle (Belgian ale). Garnish with a lemon wedge.
