The Maxim Life Health & Beauty Series: Five Months of Gluten Classes

Food fads come and go. One day eggs are the worst thing ever; the next they're a super food.

Once fat was the enemy, and then it was just trans fats.

And no, you're probably not the only who feels like your head is going to blow up in the process of keeping track.

If you're even remotely into health, you've probably heard something about the nefarious nature of gluten, and you're probably wondering if it's just another fad.

Starting tonight, The Maxim Life Health & Beauty Series will fill you in. The monthly networking -- and wine drinking -- series of events is going to explore the dangers of gluten and will serve as a benefit for Talia Bennardo, the inspiration for Talia's Tuscan Table.

Starting today, from 4 to 8 p.m., the Health & Beauty series will include educational presentations from health and wellness practitioners, live cooking demos, buffet spread by local chefs, organic wine tasting, raffles, local wellness, vendors, and more.

Food and Nutrition Educator, Coco Frey of Eat the Truth will be conducting the cooking demo and shedding light on issues with gluten.

"Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains," said Frey. "Humans have modified it into a thickening agent and we're bombarded with it from so many different directions. Most items from the inside of the grocery store contains white flour or whole wheat flour and thickening agents, like bottle salad dressings and other low fat items."

According to Frey, gluten is not just an issue for individuals with celiac disease and gluten intolerances: it causes inflammation in most people. Because the stomach acids have hard time digesting gluten, it tries to eject itself from the colon, which affects the digestive track and overall immune system.

Today's class will focus on gut-health. Anti-aging, inflammation, detox and juicing, and adrenal glands will be covered throughout the five month series.

For $20, guests sit-in on the cooking demo, presentations, and all the other components of the event. If you're only interested in the buffet and networking, the cost is $10. Prepayment is required.

All proceeds will be donated to Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) in honor of Talia Bennardo, daughter of Andrew Bennardo, owner of Talia's Tuscan Table in Boca Raton. Talia was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glumerulo Scleroisis (FSGS); a serious disease that attacks the kidneys.
