Farmer Jay wants to help you grow your garden.
Farmer Jay is a public relations dream for the local locavore movement -- a smart, personable farmer who's passionate about sharing tips on healthy eating.

You would think that between running Farmer Jay Organics and writing for New Times, the man would just want to curl up with a good book or a beer and relax.

But in his spare time, Jason "Farmer Jay" McCobb is teaching a series of growing classes at Whole Foods in Plantation.

The three classes, in honor of Earth Month, all concentrate on different aspects of growing a home garden.

Take all three and you'll have the best-tasting garden in your neighborhood.

Each class starts at 7 p.m. and costs $10, which covers the cost of materials. During the classes, you'll start work on a micro garden, which you'll take home to nurture.

The first class is this evening, April 10. "Plant Your Own Microgreens" focuses on growing those tiny and delicious edible greens that can cost a pretty penny at your favorite restaurant. Farmer Jay will teach you how to plant your own seeds and discuss the various varieties.

On Wednesday, April 17, Farmer Jay will show you composting techniques in the "What Is Compost?" class. He'll even show you how to make his famous "Farmer Jay's Compost Tea."

On Wednesday, April 24, you'll learn how to grow your own herb garden at the "All About Herbs" class.

Space for these classes is limited, and participants must register in advance at Whole Foods' customer service desk in person or by calling the store at 954-725-8793.
