Get Your "Harlem Shake" On for Needy Kids

The "Harlem Shake" is the most inexplicably awesome thing to hit the internet since Paula Deen was riding things.

And now, the hip-pumping, shoulder-shaking, wiggleriffic dance craze is lending itself to a good cause. Salt Life Food Shack and the Barefoot Children of Fort Lauderdale Parrot Head Club are teaming up this Thursday to shoot a mass "Harlem Shake" video -- all for the sake of Kids in Distress. Jimmy Buffett would be totally proud.

DJ Baauer's namesake song's been around for a while, but it was only after four dudes in Comic Con gear shot a viral video that the "Harlem Shake" turned into internet legend. Everyone from Grumpy Cat to the Today Show crew has gotten in on the flash-mob dance craze.

And starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, dancers can gather at the Salt Life Food Shack to shake it for Kids in Distress, a nonprofit that's all about providing family strengthening and children's services for more than 10,000 children and their families.

Bring a buck to participate. And come in costume. One decked-out attendee will receive a $100 Salt Life Food Shack gift card. Plus, the Parrot Head folks will host a 50/50 raffle, and the restaurant will donate a portion of its proceeds from the day's sales to Kids in Distress.

The event is one of the Parrot Head Club's monthly "phlockings," where 300 Jimmy Buffett fans socialize, network, and raise money for a different nonprofit cause.

So if you've been itching to get to shaking, now's your chance. The kids will thank you for your hip-pumping skills.

The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at 2600 N. University Drive in Coral Springs. Cost is $1 to participate, and costumes are encouraged. For more info, visit Salt Life Food Shack's website or Facebook page.
