Looking to Get Healthy: Five New Year's Resolutions to Try

It's about time: the holidays are over. And your body could not be more grateful. The time has come to stop the binge drinking and junk-food eating. Let's be honest: there's a reason new gym memberships astronomically explode after the New Year. After the past month's excess, you're probably feeling like shit.

Sure, you could try the master cleanse or some other crazy detox, but that may not exactly help your cause. Naturopath Jessie Keener of Shumway Wellness offers some advice on healthy resolutions for the New Year.

Anti-Inflammation Diets
Anti-inflamation diets are the big thing right now. This means avoiding gluten, dairy, white sugar and adding raw foods to your diet. Overcooked and over-processed foods cause inflammation. Adding more salads and raw foods to your diet will help to combat these negative effects. However, she does not advise going fully raw unsupervised, as it could be too much for your body to handle right off the bat. According to Keener, "All of the sciences agree: inflammation is the precursor to disease. Eating gluten-free is a big one. Gluten is extremely inflaming, whether you have gluten sensitivities or not."

Stop Microwaving
"A great resolution is to stop microwaving foods. It completely destroys the life force of everything you microwave. There's a reason they've been banned in Russia since 1972," says Keener. They may be fast and convenient, but if it's killing any nutrients found in the food it doesn't really make sense. If you're trying to stay healthy, stick to cold foods or the good old fashioned stove-top.

Switch to Purified Water
Unless you live near the top of a glacial peak, your tap water isn't pure. Keener suggest investing in a high-quality water filter and staying away from plastic water bottles. "The chemicals in the plastic leach into the water," she says. No matter what dietary changes you make, if you're not drinking clean water -- and lots of it -- it's not going to make a difference.

Detox With Salad
We all know there are tons of special diets and cleanses that are intended to detox your entire body. Unfortunately, many of those remedies come with their own side effects, which are just going to make you feel worse. Keener suggests eating three salads a day to clean out all of the toxins in your system. She highly recommends increasing your intake of raw foods at breakfast. It might sound strange, but she says scrambled eggs and salad is a great combination. "Anything dark green is best: parsley, kale, spinach, swiss chard, cilantro" she says, "Cilantro detoxifies heavy metals and it taste great in salads."

Drink Lemon Juice in Water
Most people tend to sway toward being too acidic. Lemon in water helps to alkalize ph levels in the body and helps aid in digestion and elimination--code for detox. Keener suggests drinking warm purified water with fresh lemon juice in the afternoon. According to her, "Most people's bodies naturally want to alkalize in the afternoon. Between 2:00 and 5:00 pm is best."
