Love cheese? Ever dream of making your own?
Well, now you can thanks to a new class offered by Lake Worth's Bx Beer Depot
, which will be hosting its very first cheese making course in conjunction with Gulp! Food and Libations this Sunday, November 18th, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The course will be led by West Palm Beach's JoJo Milano, owner of Delilah's Dairy Farm, who will be instructing participants on the basics of cheese making during this introductory, three-hour class.
The event is currently open to as many as 30 participants who will work in groups of four to five people while sharing a home cheese making kit that includes all the materials and ingredients needed to make 30 pounds of cheese.
The class will be using a cheese making kit from Ricki Carroll, otherwise known as the "Cheese Queen." Designed for beginners, the kit comes with a basket mold, rennet tablets, thermometer, cheesecloth and a recipe book with instructions on making eight homemade-style, preservative-free cheeses including Farmhouse Cheddar, gouda, Monterey Jack, feta, cottage cheese, Colby, parmesan and ricotta.
For $40, the Bx Beer Depot cheese making class will include one kit per group, as well as one gallon of fresh milk and the resins and cultures needed to yield approximately one pound of cheese. Participants will also receive a bottle of wine served with a platter of assorted cheese, charcuterie and snacks to nibble on during the class.
The cheese making course will be the first of many, said Bx Beer Depot owner Sally Parsons, who plans on implementing several different do-it-yourself-style classes over the course of the coming year. In the future, keep an eye out for different formats of the cheese making course and several other make-your-own courses, such as how to make bread.
"Because we are a home brew shop, we're reaching out to get more people involved with do-it-yourself projects beyond brewing your own beer," Parsons told Clean Plate Charlie. "We want to take what we do to the next level."
