Back in 1997, fast food chain Taco Bell started an advertising campaign featuring a talking Chihuahua.
The dog proved more popular than the food, and Chihuahuas started appearing in movies, in chic cafes, and in the arms of starlets like Paris Hilton.
Unfortunately, a breed's growing popularity also means an increase in homeless Chihuahuas roaming the streets and lingering in shelters.
Recently, the Tri-County Humane Society, a 100% no-kill animal shelter in Boca Raton, rescued over 50 Chihuahuas from a shelter in Hialeah that was overwhelmed with the tiny pocket pets.
Most of the dogs were dehydrated, malnourished, and in need of immediate medical attention. All are in need of homes.
Rocco's Tacos in Boca Raton is holding a fundraiser to raise money for the care of these little dogs and to find homes for the rescued pets. On Tuesday, October 16 from 6 - 8 p.m. you can meet some of the Chihuahuas that are ready to go home and Tri-County Humane staff will be on hand with adoption applications -- just in case you fall in love. Donate $10 and receive a complimentary drink ticket. A $50 donation gets you a small bottle of tequila to take home, and anyone who donates $100 will walk away with a bottle of Patron.
Be a double do-gooder that evening, because it's also Tacos & Tatas Tuesday. $14.99 gets you all-you-can-eat tacos in your choice of chicken, pork, steak, beef, mushroom, shrimp, or mahi. Drink specials include $5 tequila drinks, $15 pitchers of margaritas, $3 Mexican beers, and $6 ultimate vodka cocktails.A percentage of sales will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Tacos & Tatas Tuesdays, by the way, is available at all Rocco's Tacos locations every Tuesday in October. Rocco's Tacos owner, Rocco Mangel, has set a goal of raising $25,000 toward breast cancer awareness.
