National Fried Chicken Day is Today: Here's Where to Celebrate
|Celebrate National Fried Chicken Day with Betty.|
Today is National Fried Chicken Day, the annual event where breaded poultry, placed in bubbling oil until golden brown, gets its own place on the calendar...sort of.
To be honest, any reason to eat fried chicken works for us...here are our favorites.
Ernie's Italian Chophouse in Lighthouse Point is celebrating with an Italian family-style fried chicken dinner deal for two ($54), which gets you a Caesar of mixed green salad, chicken scarpariello (a whole chicken broken into eight pieces), cavatelli with fontina cheese (the Italian version of mac 'n cheese), plus a cannoli to share. The deal is good through Sunday, July 8. It's the upscale way of celebrating this humblest of meals.
Betty's Soul Food in Lauderdale Lakes is what real fried chicken is all about. Betty Taylor has been at the same location off Sistrunk Boulevard for what seems like ages. Time stands still when you walk in the door and are embraced by the scent of good southern cooking, A quarter of a chicken with two sides (we choose the black eyed-peas and collard greens) is $8.99, which is a small price to pay for a trip to the deep south.
Keese's Simply Delicious in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is perfectly located for taking out a fried chicken lunch to enjoy as a beach picnic. This family-owned restaurant has had the same storefront since 1953 and the recipe has never changed. Order four pieces for $9.95, eight pieces for $18.95, then wait...because the chicken is fried to order. Take a walk to the beach a block away to watch the surfers and come back a few minutes later to pick up your bird, fried to perfection.
