44. Hazelnut Gelato from Sonny's Gelato Cafe

In my twenties, I was fortunate -- and irresponsible enough with my "disposable income" -- to travel twice to Italy. Traveling on less than a shoestring each time, I was unable to partake in many of the culinary delights that crossed my path. There was one treat, however, that I simply never turned down: gelato. More specifically, hazelnut gelato. Very "Eat, Pray, Love," yes, but it was a sincere and shameless daily ritual that deserves to be repeated on a return visit.

Circumstances being what they are, a trip across the Atlantic to recreate a week of indulgent gelato consumption isn't likely to happen this year. In the meantime, the hazelnut gelato from Sonny's Gelato Cafe will certainly suffice. The environs are in no way reminiscent of those little Italian villages where I whispered sweet nothings to so many tiny cups of frozen cream, but the Boca store's freshly-made gelato acts as a tasty little stand-in for the experience. The ratio of sugar to cream is just so; this isn't one of those gut-busting frozen scoops that will leave you gasping for water and swearing off sweets. If anything, it borders dangerously on demanding a weekly habit.

Sonny's is a great spot for lunch in addition to gelato. Italian family owned and operated is why this place is the real deal.
