South Florida's Best Guacamole

DosCaminos_Guacamole.JPG

Guacamole takes something great -- the avocado -- and makes it even better (pair it with still-warm housemade tortilla chips and a margarita and you achieve perfection). South Florida can't match Southern California in the guac department, but there certainly are worthy contenders in this region. Below are five of the best guacamoles you'll find in Broward and Palm Beach. Did we miss your favorite? If so, let us know in the comments section.

Rocco's Tacos and Tequila Bar

This growing minichain subscribes to the "less is more" school of guac. It also practices transparency when it comes to the preparation of this popular appetizer and side: The guacamole is made tableside in a molcajete. In addition to ripe avocados, there's a little cilantro, tomatoes, onions, and Rocco's "secret" spice blend (which includes a touch of paprika, among other seasonings). Served with house-made chips, the hefty treat is $12.

Uncle Julio's Fine Mexican Food

The house-made guacamole at this small chain operation -- which started in Dallas and likewise gears to Tex-Mex tastes -- is made with fresh Haas avocados and served with freshly made chips. Even if you don't plan on getting much more than a liquid dinner at this loud Mizner Park joint (the margarita swirl is a popular choice), the large guacamole can provide a bit of nourishment in food form.

Dos Caminos

Slip into this dimly lit hotel restaurant after a day at the beach and refuel with the plethora of good fats found in a sizable helping of freshly mashed guacamole served with house-made tortilla chips. The chain's guac gets its distinct flavor from a combo of herbs and spices like cilantro and minced chilies, plus a touch of onion, tomato, and lime juice. A touch spicier than the standard variety of guacamole; you may want to order a margarita as a sidecar.

Zona Fresca

The house-made salsa at this locally owned favorite gets lots of love, but don't forget about the guacamole. This version is made just for you with whole ripe avocados and served with house-made chips fried in cholesterol-free canola oil, so it's totally healthy. The low price is another draw, as it is with everything on the menu. Both sizes of guacamole, small and large, are less than $3. If you like your guac with your entrée, you'll find it in menu items like the grilled veggie burrito and served on the side of quesadillas.

Chipotle Mexican Grill

Yeah. It's a chain. And yes, it does charge extra if you want to get the green stuff slathered on your burrito or soft taco. But fans of the fast-casual Mexican phenom swear allegiance to the creamy dip. If you like your guacamole served "stand alone," you can order a serving with chips that are made on premises daily. The guac is made of hand-mashed ripe avocados, and the powers-that-be promise that batches are made up to three times a day.
