Weird Al Yankovic Talks About Vegetarianism on "WTF With Marc Maron"
|Weird Al loves animals: just not on his plate.|
Yankovic said he has been a vegetarian since 1992 when he read John Robbins' "Diet for a New America" and stopped eating meat based on the book's arguments from a "health, sociopolitical, and ethical" standpoint.
When asked if he liked being veg, Yankovic laughed and said it gets him out of "uncomfortable situations."
"If I'm in a foreign country and they say 'Try our fried rattlesnake' (I can say) 'Oh! I wish I could! But, oh no! Vegetarian. Sorry!"
The singer/parodist said while he was vegan for some time, he's reverted to eating cheese on occasion. His wife also was a vegetarian for years until becoming pregnant with the couple's now eight-year-old daughter. "She's vegetarian, but she eats meat all the time," he said of his wife. For the record, the couple hasn't steered their kid toward the vegetarian lifestyle out of a fear of rebellion, but Yankovic said she naturally skews veggie (most of the time).
Maron's podcast -- usually recorded in his garage at his "Cat Ranch" in Southern California -- has gained a sizable following based on his personal revelations coupled with revealing interviews with stars like Robin Williams, Gallagher, Sarah Silverman, and Chris Rock. He routinely discusses a love/hate relationship/obsession with food which has led to a tradition of fans bringing homemade baked goods to his live shows. Maron -- who has family in South Florida and frequently talks on his podcast about the eccentricities of our region -- will appear Thursday night in Miami as part of the South Beach Comedy Festival. You can basically guarantee that food, vegetarian or not, will be a topic of discussion.
