Havana's Cuban Cuisine Opens Second Location

Maddox offers fightin' words on his blog today about the most overrated sandwiches in America. It's a gem of a post that includes the Philly cheese steak -- "an exploration of sadness" and a "mouthful of suck"; the poor boy -- "why not put nachos and jalapeño poppers on a sandwich too, dickheads?"; and Primanti's sandwiches stuffed with French fries.
Notably absent from his list are any varieties of Cuban sandwiches because they're ridiculously delicious. There's the classic Cuban sandwich, Cuban bread brushed with olive oil,
stacked with roast pork ham, Swiss, pickles, yellow mustard, and, if you're from Tampa, salami. Swap out the salami and dress up some bread that's similar to challah and you've got a media noche. Then there's the pan con bistec, a Cuban steak sandwich marinated in lime and garlic and served with onions; and the pan con lechon, the pulled-pork variation. For less than $10, any of these can be had for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the new location of Havana's Cuban Cuisine in Sunrise, the second spot from Michael Mellion and Edwin Scheer, opened less than two years after the flagship's debut in Cooper City. The new digs reside in a 4,500-square-foot space with a sprawling patio.
Featuring an extensive dinner menu, the concept aligns with the flagship's hybrid of Cuban, Argentine, and Mexican dishes, featuring tostones rellenos de camaron with a Creole sauce, Cuban ropa vieja, and an Argentine skirt steak with chimichurri, for example. Sangria is made tableside, and I hear they make delicious Cuba libre and mojito. Perhaps this is the place to rope in a designated driver.
