L'Escalier at The Breakers in Palm Beach Closes

L'Escalier has closed its doors.
L'Escalier, the extravagant French dining room at The Breakers in Palm Beach has closed its doors - not for the usual seasonal lull, but for good.

The award-winning restaurant will not re-open in the fall, but will "evolve into an exciting, new concept to be unveiled in 2012", according to Ann Margo Peart, Public Relations Manager for the resort.

L'Escalier was known for both its modern French cuisine and high price tags. A "Foiewhopper", the Waygu Beef, Hudson Valley Foie Gras, and Maine Lobster on Brioche appetizer went for a mere $45, while the Mile Fed Veal Trio maxed out wallets at a stunning $59.

Seven course Grand Tasting Menus with wine pairings were priced at a recession-unfriendly $262. While some may fault the economic downturn for the closing, The Breakers Sunday Brunch, at $90, still packs in the crowds.

No word yet on whether Chef de Cuisine Greg Vassos, who spent last summer at the James Beard House in New York, will be involved in the new Breakers project.

Paul Leon, President of The Breakers, said of the closing, "We are extremely proud of the accolades and stellar reviews earned by the entire team over the past few years. Now we look forward to the next chapter, when their talents and hard work will be showcased in an engaging, multi-faceted food and everage experience of equal quality."
