Recovering From Cinco de Mayo? Five International Hangover Cures
Did you start off the day curled up in the fetal position on the floor of your friend's bathroom? Perhaps you stumbled into your living room this morning and discovered that yesterday, someone used your key to break into your house then proceeded to spill sour mix all over the floor and leave used, red SOLO cups and empty Dos Equis bottles everywhere! Thank goodness they didn't steal your electronics!
Slowly the haze starts to fade away and you start to recall tiny fragments of last night. You were a star last night, weren't you?! Singing with the mariachi band, rocking an over-sized sombrero (hilarious--jejeje), and pounding shots of tequila like it was your job. Yes, yesterday you were on fire but the day of reckoning is here. It's Seis de Mayo or as some like to call it, the Fiesta Aftermath.
1. Herring and Onions ( Germany)
Get some electrolytes in your life!
If it feels like your brain is slamming into your skull every time you turn your head you may need some electrolytes in your life. Why drink Gatorade or Smart Water when you can scarf down canned fish instead? Herring filets wrapped with pickles and onions, also known as Rollmops, are the perfect way to put the pep back in your step! Rollmops' briny sauce provides the sugar and electrolytes that your body craves after a morning spent praying to the porcelain god.
2. Tripe Soup (Turkey)
Quell your angry sea of stomach acid with tripe soup!
Want to quell the angry sea of stomach acid and tequila that is sloshing around in your belly? Before you break out the Pepto try some spicy tripe soup. The heat from the chilis in this soup and the protein from the tripe create a diversion as your stomach churns away tirelessly to process this spicy elixir. The good news-- tripe soup requires few ingredients-- tripe (usually cow or sheep stomach), hot chilis (just a few-don't get crazy!), garlic, and vinegar ( sour cream is optional); it's kind of a no-brainer. The bad news--it takes a while to cook down tripe and if you don't cook it long you'll be chewing it until next Cinco de Mayo. Enjoy!
3. Buffalo Milk (Namibia)

The East African country of Namibia is not only the birthplace of two Jolie-Pitt babies it's also the birthplace of one sweet hangover cure, Buffalo Milk. It might sound sketchy but Buffalo Milk is probably the tastiest hangover option on the list! The Namibian version of Hair of the Dog, Buffalo Milk is a combination of spiced rum, dark rum and creme liqueur topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Not a bad way to start the day! Bottoms Up!
4. Ox Blood Soup (Korea)
Eat your heart out Zimmerman!
Pork spine, congealed ox blood, egg yolks and cabbage simmered in beef broth may seem like a soup that only Andrew Zimmerman could love but in Korea, Ox Blood soup is a mainstay on the boozer circuit. In fact, in Korea this soup is called Haejangguk or "hangover soup". If only it came in a can...
5. Vegemite Hangover Smoothie (Australia)
Words cannot express how vile this smoothie sounds but it does have the makings of a good hangover cure--protein, spice, vitamin C and sugar. Down the hatch!
