Wendy's Natural-Cut Fries Not So Natural After All

Categories: Buyer Beware

Wendy's Fries - they look natural enough..
Wendy's natural-cut fries with sea salt sound almost like granola in their commercials. The fast-food chain touts that the fries are natural-cut russet potatoes, sprinkled with sea salt for a fry that's better (and better for you).

Shocker of a lifetime -- Wendy's may not be exactly telling the whole truth. According to Yahoo Finance, it's true that Wendy's fries have a bit of skin left on them (making them look all golden and natural). But then they're sprayed with sodium acid pyrophosphate and dusted with dextrose, a corn-based sugar.

A visit to Wendy's nutrition information website confirms the use of the above additives, as well as dimethylpolysiloxane, a silicone-based antifoaming agent. At least the sea salt is listed as... sea salt.

Wendy's fries are also frozen, which is odd because their website asks the question "ice-puck or fresh cooked"? We guess they mean the meat, not the potatoes.

It's all in the wording. It says "natural-cut", which really means nothing since I am unsure how you get an "unnatural-cut". It says nothing about the fries being natural. The cutting of the fries is natural.

Hey, I like chopped cardboard boxes mixed with dog poop - which is exactly what these new fries taste like. Yum!

Wendys cant we have the old fries back! Please?!

They're natural enough. The fries won't kill you any faster and they are in fact a "natural cut" rather than a manufactured shape... which is what the name implies. Skin on, that's all.

You 'guess they mean the meat'? Sounds like a slight agenda. Fries are not patty shaped.

So, you're telling us that a processed, fried food has ingredients common to processed, fried foods (and only one of which, the anti-foaming agent used in the fryolator oil to prevent it from foaming over and burning the fry cook or setting the restaurant on fire, is a little questionable)? All of which are "generally recognized as safe" food additives? No references to good studies indicating that any of these present a risk, or at what levels they do so?

And, OMG, they're frozen when they ship them (even though freezing helps the texture of the finished product)??

I'd bet that these fries pushing you over your daily caloric needs presents a bigger health risk than the additives.

Right. Because they are holding guns to peoples' heads and force feeding them their food.

It is the people who choose this unhealthy food that are to blame. If people didn't purchase it and insisted on healthy alternatives, those alternatives would quickly show up.

Wow. Someone's not paying attention at all. Polydimethylsiloxane is a PLASTIC. That means they're putting plastic in your food.

Still think it tastes great?

The point isn't whether they taste great, the point is they're unnatural

I'm really tired of the "no one is forcing them" argument. It's pedestrian at best. By that logic, since no one is "forcing" me to pay my taxes, why don't I just keep that money for myself? The general public are lemmings driven by the dollar. More than anything else, they buy what is convenient and cheap. More over, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S IN IT! Which leads to the inevitable situation where they stop asking because they don't really want to know. They want food that is cheap. That's the bottom line. Yeah, sure, some people have made other choices, so you have Whole Foods and Trader Joes. But those are tiny players in the overall food market in this country. Fast Food joints feed vastly higher numbers of Americans. The chemicals in these foods cause disease, plain and simple. If you believe that the lack of a current long-term study proving the dangers means that they are actually as safe as their manufacturers want you to think, then you might as well still believe that cigarettes are good for you. It's only a matter of time.

Well, no offense...ANYTHING you get from a fast-food establishment like Wendy's, Mcdonald's, Taco Bell, Etc. is un natural, unless of course, all you eat is the bun, lettuce and some tomatoes...but then again, those are sprayed with chemicals too, so yeah....NOTHINGS good for you, especially at places like this!

You should of kept reading... He makes the same point you do. He's not saying he thinks you don't have to pay taxes, he's saying that we all have a choice, pay taxes or don't pay taxes and suffer the aftermath. We all choose either good food or bad food. You can choose to be ignorant and not educate yourself on what is making you obese. People want to make money, no matter how they go about it. Even if it means selling a few million hamburgers and fries than contain unspeakable substances most people wouldn't feed their dog, they'll do it.... with a smile and then like any salesman they'll convince you that you made a great choice, a healthy one in fact, to get you to come back. If the general population finally figured out why their midsections are as wide as they are tall and stopped eating so much crap, then fast food would change their menu's to what we do want to buy. Called supply and demand folks. However I guarantee every person who reads this has eaten and will most likely continue to eat at places like this because most people lack enough integrity to stand up for what they believe in and stick to their guns.

Actually in reply to a_ron below regarding his suggestion of a law making you pay for your own medical care if you elect to regularly eat dangerous food:

We used to go further than this in the UK. Attempted suicide used to be Against The Law. Although I think you were still 'entitled' to health care paid for by all tax payers after the event. This might have been before Coca Cola and slim-cut 'fries' hit our shores and when most of the attempted suicides would have been shorter-term ones, like jumping off a bridge at low tide.

Over here we had a generation who, having been deprived of unhealthy food during 'the war' (1939-45) decided they would make up for the six years unavailability of cream etc (and still being alive?) by having as much of it as they wanted, now. Is there a factor like that working in the USA today?

Bronco084 said - HEY DUMBASS THEY ARE FORCING YOU TO PAY TAXES....JUST TRY NOT PAYING THEM !!

Okay, so let's go with this.  Since you obey the law re: your taxes, given the consequences if you don't, let's make a NEW law.  If you or your kids eat this crap and it makes you sick (heart disease, joint problems, diabetes, etc), you get to pay for your own healthcare out of pocket.  How bout that?  If you can't show definitive evidence that you are genetically predisposed to a particular illness that would have come regardless of how you had taken care of yourself (this can't be proven, by the way), then your eating/exercise habits should be reflected in the percentage of your healthcare that you are personally responsible for.  Why should I have to pay for the fact that you don't care what you put in your mouth so long as it's under $5 and it's in your belly less than 10 minutes after you order it?

I don't want to pay for people who buy before they think about repercussions beyond this minute's caloric needs.  Because even then, they probably don't need as much as they order.  Sure, McDonald's offers a salad or two but that's not why anyone ever goes there.

How would you feel about that law?  You still have a choice.  You can eat wherever you want.  You can fast food till your little heart's content.  So long as YOU are personally financially responsible for the number it does on your health prospects.  Sound good, dumbass?

To Josh (and others)Do you really need to eat hot food midday everyday? You could make a (healthy) sandwich and take it to work. You might even be able to buy a healthy sandwich/salad out if you don't have time to avoid the threat of buying food you can eat there and then. i.e. 'Here and Now' does not always have to include fat, excessive carbohydates and more fat. No-one has mentioned drinks, which if out of a tin / bottle Can be pretty lethal too.

I used to think education (lack thereof) was the problem. But surely non-one, even in the USA, can still be in doubt as to the long-term effects of regularly consuming the 'McDonalds' type of 'fast' food? So its a question of PRIORITIES: Do you want a good probability that you may live on into a healthy old age, OR NOT? If so, take some decisions you might otherwise prefer not to. Take actions you otherwise might prefer not to. Else be prepared to die earlier than you need. You've been given the choice. Its UP TO YOU.

to Chris: You know full well that its easier, faster, and cheaper to get fast food. So obviously people think about it; you may have time to sit around cooking all day, but other people have classes and jobs that they need to go to in order to keep their homes...

You are forced to pay taxes. Failure to pay is a crime and you'll go to jail. That's how they finally got Al Capone. The only reason you find the argument pedestrian is because it's a no-brainer -- hence the frequent usage. Willful ignorance, laziness, being a cheapskate (shopping for fresh food is FAR cheaper than buying fast food, so this is a red herring) are all individual choices we make. People make the choice to buy a hamburger, someone in the market is going to make a cheap hamburger and sell it to them. A million people want a hamburger? A million hamburgers will be made. There is no supply without demand. Stop blaming the merchants of death for people's choice to buy into it. Individual accountability is disappearing in this country and it's going to be a painful road into obscurity. And obesity.

Man stopped reading when you said no one is forcing you to pay texes. By that logic see what happens if you dont pay them. Fast food because its cheap and FAST, the problem is not enough cheap FAST options for people over burdernd with having 10000 other things to do....I gotta roll but ya dont eat the food if you dont like it. If your obese and eat here then well, enjoy being large.

I know this may sound silly, but has anyone thought of growing/buying some healthy food, then taking it home and cooking it? This side of the Atlantic we have things called ovens and hobs, which get hot and cook the food you put in/on them. This way you know better what you're eating. Its so cool, surprisingly. Try it!
