Vegalicious Recipe Scholarship Contest: Deadline Friday

In junior high, my best friend accompanied me to a science fair where one student's experiment surrounded around what happens when you put a mouse and a snake in the same small glass case. I'll spare you the slow motion National Geographic details and just tell you that the snake eventually went from intimidating roommate to sly single occupant that day.

We both went veg as a result and learned two valuable life lessons 1. Skip the safety goggles and subscription to Scientific American because Catholic school lets just about anything qualify as a "science experiment" and 2. Never, ever become the snake.

The second is a mantra we both hold onto to this day. While it's not the most popular lifestyle choice in a world where ketchup was once considered a vegetable, about three million kids ages 8 to 18 consider themselves vegetarian, according to a 2009 Harris research poll.

Giving some recognition to a growing trend, Whole Foods has partnered with vegan restaurant Sublime to offer high school seniors with a gift for vegan cooking a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship with the Vegalicious Recipe Contest. Recipes will be accepted through Friday April 15th. Details are below...

Follow Clean Plate Charlie on Facebook and on Twitter: @CleanPlateBPB. Sublime & Whole Foods Markets are pleased to announce the 2011 It's Vegalicious Recipe Scholarship Contest. The program is open to High School Seniors enrolled in Broward, Palm Beach and Dade County schools.

Students should create an original, vegan recipe for a soup, salad, appetizer, entree or dessert. The best three recipes will be selected and the students will prepare their dishes for a judging and awards ceremony on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Sublime. We have partnered with Whole Foods Markets to offer a Grand Prize of $5,000 and two runners-up will receive $500 gift cards to use for their graduation parties at Sublime.

Complete contest rules and an online entry form are available at www.itsvegalicious.com. Recipes are being accepted through Friday, April 15, 2011.

It's Vegalicous was created by Sublime for the 2009-2010 school year to promote higher learning and to encourage young people to become more conscious of their food choices. To date the program has distributed nearly $15,000 dollars to 6 students several local schools.
