At a place that looks more like the previous home of a fallen fast-food restaurant than an independently owned sandwich shop, it's clear that patrons go for the food, not the ambiance. A quiet line of hungry customers can span the entire length of the dining room during a weekday lunch hour, and the staff's primary goal is to get a delicious sandwich into your grubby hands and fast. So you better not mess up the flow of productivity by failing to follow instructions listed on signs at the counter.

To avoid grief from sub shop employees:
1. Know what you want to order when you walk under the "Order Here Please" sign.
2. Place your order to the line cook in a sweaty bandanna and step aside quickly.
3. Quietly wait for the cook to cue you for a toppings order.
4. Pay for your sandwich and quickly trot to the nearest open table.

The most disconcerting part of ordering from Philly Sub Shop isn't the intimidating line of employees behind the counter but passing up dozens of almost equally delicious sandwich options to order the celebrated Philly cheese steak ($4.49 for a six-inch sub). Thinly sliced steak is tossed on a screaming-hot flat-top griddle, then combined with sweet caramelized onions. Mildly sweet provolone cheese slowly melts atop the meaty mixture on a bed of toppings of your choice. Juices of savory, succulent meat are absorbed by a pillowy soft sub roll.
