Subway is beating the crap out of McDonald's to win the title of largest fast-food restaurant chain. According to the Wall Street Journal, at the end of 2010, Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide, compared to 32,737 for McDonald's. The number of McDonald's stores was disclosed in an SEC filing.

The majority of Subway stores are in the United States, but according to Subway's website, there are Subways in 95 countries, including Eqypt, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Costa Rica, South Africa, and Switzerland.

Subway leads the way in fast food healthy eating alternatives, offering low-fat, low-calorie and vegetarian food options, while McDonalds still serves few healthy menu items. Subway's successful advertising campaigns incude spokesman Jared, the average guy who lost the equivalent of a twin brother eating only Subway and the annoyingly catchy $5 Footlong jingle.

Though Subway beat out McDonald's in number of restaurant locations, McDonald's still leads the pack in sales, with a reported $24 billion in revenue last year.
