No. 91: Mariquitas From Cabana
Potato chips, you're outta here. Tortilla chips, take a hike. Corn chips, fat chance, buddy. Veggie chips, I don't think so. All you wussie little chips better step aside, 'cuz there's a new sheriff in Junk Foodtown, and its name is Mariquitas. Think plantains sliced wafer-thin lengthwise, then deep-fried to greaseless, crackling crispness and salted. With every bite you get a little salty, a little savory, a little sweet, not to mention that all-important crunch. But wait, there's more. At this vibrantly colorful West Palm Neuvo Latino restaurant a basket of crack-addictive mariquitas comes with an unctuous, guacamole-esque "avocado salsa" and bracingly citric mojo that's goosed with enough garlic to make Vlad the Impaler (that's Dracula to you) rotate in his earth-filled coffin. All other chips, bow down in abject surrender. Mariquitas rule.
