No. 93: Crème Brûlée With Berry Compote From Mojo

"But it's only crème brûlée," I hear you whine. "A simple custard of eggs, cream, sugar, and vanilla that's as common as 80-year-old tourists with hair sprouting out of their ears driving 45 mph in the fast lane of I-95."

​ Well, yes. And that's what makes Mojo's crème brûlée so special -- among the thousand-million-bazillion versions of the classic French dessert, this one stands out for its indecently lush, silken texture and perfect balance of eggy, sweet and vanilla-y flavors, all lurking under a thick, bronzed, caramelized sugar crust that shatters like edible glass when you prod it with a fork. But what really puts this baby over the top is its sidecar of sweet-tart berry compote that you can spoon into the custard, soufflé-like, extracting a whole circus tent full of lusciousness with every bite.
