Order Up: A Guide to Florida's Divey Seafood Joints

Get ready to shuck, peel, and slurp -- our Dish column this week is on South Florida's cheap seafood dives.

These joints are the types of places where you can soldier up to a worn bar top and order Gulf oysters by the dozen, slurping down briny shellfish with pints of frosty beer. They're the last bastion of the Old Florida That Was, and proof that there's still some semblance of that roguish, freewheeling lifestyle alive today.

With the Deepwater Horizon oil spill looming in the Gulf of Mexico, however, it's only a matter of time before the oysters and shrimp so popular in these parts dry up. What happens after that is anyone's guess (though it likely involves more expensive seafood trucked in from the East Coast), but one thing's for sure: Enjoy these places while you can, folks. They might just be gone some day.

The column covers five go-to dives: The Whale's Rib in Deerfield Beach, Hurricane Alley in Boynton Beach, Seafood World in Lighthouse Point, Tarks of Dania, and Kelly's Landing in Fort Lauderdale.
