KeysSpill.com Needs Volunteers

Florida's not out of the woods yet regarding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. In fact, Gulfstream currents could carry oil as far as the Florida Keys in a little over a week.

That means fisheries located in South Florida could be affected soon. (For more on how the oil spill is affecting local restaurants, check out this week's column.)

But you can help limit the impact.

KeysSpill.com is a site organizing volunteer opportunities and cleanups throughout the Florida Keys. You can sign up to help on the site, contact a volunteer organizer, and browse upcoming volunteer events.

There are a few activities scheduled for today, including a meeting for people interested in becoming volunteer organizers and helping to create hair booms (seen in the vid above). On Saturday, a cleanup will be held on Little Torch Key. Cleanups help reduce the impact the oil will have on the area ahead of time.

You can also sign a petition that will be sent to President Obama asking him to halt drilling in our waters.
