Target Stores to Stop Selling Farm-Raised Salmon, Will Now Carry Wild-Caught Only

Pretty conscientious for a national retailer.
Now, all the frozen, fresh, and smoked salmon you find at Target will be the wild variety. The company will transition all of its sushi product to the wild stuff by the end of 2010.
The changeover has won some major acclaim with advocates for wild-caught salmon like the Monterrey Bay Aquarium and Greenpeace, who say this could usher in a wave of retailers moving toward more environmentally conscious product. While farm-raised salmon creates pollution and contributes to adverse chemicals and parasites finding their way into the environment, wild-caught salmon is one of the best sustainable choices in seafood today. Wild stocks are carefully managed and monitored so that fishing them has little, if any, long-term impact.
It's a pretty bold move by Target, and it would be great if other national retailers took note. For its next trick, Target could take on the ever-expanding tuna industry. Now, that would be a shakeup.
