B.B. King's Blues Club isn't the only newbie to start slinging barbecue and blues north of the Broward County line. In Delray, Johnnie Brown's has opened in the old Elwood's space on Atlantic Avenue, dishing nightly live music and a menu of moderately priced comfort food favorites.

That last is something owners Nick Nicholas and Jim Patrinos know more than a little something about, as they're also proprietors of Primanti Bros., a Pittsburgh-based chain with three locations in Broward and famed for sandwiches larger than your head that pile on both fries and cole slaw.

Named after architect Addison Mizner's pet monkey, Johnnie Brown's exudes a tropical vibe to go along with its all-American menu of food and tunes. Starters include smoked fish dip, conch fritters and a dozen different kinds of wings, with hearty salads, barbecue and a roster of burgers filling things out. Entrée prices top out at $18.95 for a rack of baby back ribs but most main plates come in at or under ten bucks.

For music, the nightly menu includes Monday blues, Tuesday doo-wop, Wednesday classic rock, Thursday faux Elvis, Friday and Saturday rock 'n' roll, and Sunday Margaritaville redux.

Can you sing, "Wasting away on Atlantic Avenue?"
