Crawfish Back in Season in South Florida

That's right: Crawfish are back in season. Just in time for the Super Bowl.

While mudbugs have no official season like lobster or crab, they typically are best when eaten spring through summer, when they are their largest. But many restaurants begin packing in on the fresh buggers as early as December.

Rosey Baby in Lauderhill is one of the few restaurants around to offer fresh crawdads. Today is the first day they will be serving them officially. Rosey boils its crawfish in Cajun spices along with potatoes and corn until the shellfish are bright red and spicy as all get-out. A one-pound sampler runs $14.99. A two-quart bucket is $26.99, and a five-quart bucket is $59.99. Five quarts, by the way, is a whole lot of mudbugs.

With all the Saints fans coming to town, these puppies are arriving just in time.
